Meta Tags

Meta tags provide information about a given webpage, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are inserted into the HTML document, but are often not directly visible to a user visiting the site. The META information can be broken down into three components, which are:

  • Page title - recommended limit is 12 words
  • Keywords - recommended limit is 48 words
  • Descriptions - recommended limit is 24 words

The Web Wizard enables you to control the META tags for all pages in one area or you can customize this for each individual page.

Page Title

The page title is shown at the very top border of a web browser and it also know as the "blue title bar" on PC's due to its blue color. The three main web browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. The page title is mostly meant for search engines since very few people even notice it.

Keywords

Keywords are single words or short phrases that should be based on what you think Internet users will use to search for to find your website. Keywords need to be separated by a comma.

Description

A description appears below the link on a search engine results page as shown below. It is a short, one or two sentence description that describes either the webpage or the website. It is better to customize the description of each web page on a page by page basis, and to place an exact description of what a web visitor will learn about that page.

How a Page Title and a Description Appear on a search engine results page

The page title (1) and description (2) appear in search engine results as shown below.

View Source

To view the source for the three main browsers, click on View and then either Source, Page Source, or View Source as shown below. However, we recommend using the SEOChat tool below since it is much easier to understand what you are looking at.

View - Source in Internet Explorer

View - Source in Firefox

View - Source in Safari

What you will see when you view the source for a web page is a text document such as shown below. We have added the colors to help you identify what the search engines see. Each of these are editable using the Web Wizard simply by typing and clicking.

  1. Page title
  2. Keywords
  3. Descriptions

SEO Chat

If you want to test a website to see what the search engines see, simply enter the domain name, enter g8df4, and click Spider. You will be taken to the SEOChat website to see the results. Look to see the Spidered Text, the Page Titles, the Keywords, and the Description.
